ABSTRACT

Streeter 6 10 showed how, in human embryos, the tissues and organs develop in an integrated manner, and this series of events can be used to stage embryos without consideration of their age or length. The various mammalian embryos described in this atlas follow an almost identical sequence of development and can be placed in the same series of Carnegie stages, irrespective of age or length. The anatomy of birds is a marked variation from the basic tetrapod body plan, but in most respects their development is very similar to that of mammals. Hence, chick embryos can be related to the Carnegie stages of mammalian embryos.
