ABSTRACT

Managing a modern computer systems engineering and development organization is both challenging and rewarding. It is essential to the success of any modern engineering organization that the management and the members of the organization clearly understand and agree on the goals and objectives, and the overall responsibilities of the organization. There are many technical managers who struggle along and eventually fail due to a lack of management skills. To succeed in high-tech an environment requires a strong engineering organization that can keep up with the state of the art, and continually improve existing products as well as introduce new ones. The lifecycle is being reduced while the complexity is increasing, requiring a longer development period. The appropriate organizational structure depends very much on the size, scope, and responsibilities of the organization, the type of activities, and the people involved. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
