Although animals cannot synthesize aromatic ring systems, the distribution of aromatic compounds is universal in life. Animals are exposed to a variety of benzenoid compounds in their diet and in significant quantities. e.g., benzoate is excreted at a daily rate of 0.7 g as hippurate. '
