ABSTRACT

This chapter evaluates the conventional reference plan using fuel cell generators as well as storage batteries in an integral mode with conventional energy system, on a short-term as well as a long-term scope. In the forefront of various modes of renewable energy sources are the fuel cell and storage battery. Both are electrochemical energy devices that deliver direct current output power. There are three major economic areas: the capital cost, the operation and maintenance cost, and the fuel cost. The capital cost includes the initial investment of expanding the generating facility and transmission network. The operation and maintenance cost includes the fixed and variable operation and maintenance costs. Fuel cost includes the cost of various types of fuel used in the various generating units. Fuel cells fall into two major categories, namely, the low temperature mode which is the hydrogen-oxygen cell and the high temperature cell which is the carbon monoxide-oxygen cell.
