ABSTRACT

The culture of Farrer's scallop, Chlamys farreri, has become very important since an abundant and reliable seed source has become available. B Farrer's scallops are distributed in the Yellow Sea and are found in Japan and Korea. The development of a seed source, beginning in 1973, has resulted in a large and prosperous scallop culture. The yield of cultured scallops in 1985 was larger than that of the wild fishery in Shandong Province. C Small scallops can be placed in open water for nursery culture. Both nets and cages are used in nursery culture, as are plastic cylinders, closed at each end with small-mesh netting. Each compartment of a cage can hold 30 to 50 scallops, and 450 to 600 cages can be cultured in 1 ha of water area. Seed of Chlamys nobilis, native to China, is being hatchery reared and cultured to a small extent.
