The genus Allium can be placed in the Liliaceae family as its flower has a free ovary situated above the attachment of the other flower components, or, alternatively, in the Amaryllidiaceae family, in consideration of the fact that its umbel-shaped inflorescence is enveloped by a spathe. ^{1 – 4}
