ABSTRACT
Considering that the male-female phenomenon per se represents only one of the several elements of sexuality, we will in this review use the term “gender” rather than the more common and broader term “sex”. With Lloyd, 10 gender in a plant can be defined in terms of the relative importance of the contributions the plant makes to its reproductive fitness through its maternal and its paternal investment (that is, through its investment in seeds vs. that in pollen).
