ABSTRACT

The world faced an acute energy crisis 15 years ago. A sharp increase in the price of oil and dwindling supplies of fossil resources rendered the scientific community aware of the necessity of exploring possibilities for new energy supplies. The use of sunlight to produce alternative and environmentally clean fuels, such as hydrogen, appeared as an attractive strategy, and a large interdisciplinary effort was soon begun.
