ABSTRACT

The discussion in the previous chapters alluded to the weaknesses of current serial murder classifications and theories in the literature. For example, classification models of serial murderers have typically relied on speculation, as the focus of serial murder, that the offender is driven to murder due to his violent fantasies; suffers from some form of pathology; or kills due to narcissistic drives 13, 17, 51, 59 Another focus on serial murderers that is propounded in the literature is that offenders kill to act out sexual perversions.17o63 These types of crimes are defined as lust murders. 20 Given that the model of serial murder proposed in this book incorporates a number of forms of serial murder, the hypothesis that sexual gratification is the focus for serial murder is likely only to reflect a subsample of killers. While there are certainly sexual overtones to many serial murders, lust murderers may not be representative of serial murderers at large.
