ABSTRACT

The late Saul Alinsky, the godfather of all community organizers, said, "Organizations need action as an individual needs oxygen". Action was not an optional matter for Saul Alinsky, it was an absolute necessity. The typical negotiating team that fails to act is always planning some future action. It spends hours and hours in internal debate and reflection, searching for the perfect time to act, the perfect place to act, and the perfect opponent to act against. A critical feature of any action is the opposing team's reaction. Military strategists and historians devote a great deal of time to analyzing how location, climate, and terrain affect the outcomes of major battles. The typical negotiating team that fails to act is always planning some future action. It spends hours and hours in internal debate and reflection, searching for the perfect time to act, the perfect place to act, and the perfect opponent to act against.
