ABSTRACT

Bureaucrats, the countless people who run the governmental agencies of the country, suffer from too little pay, too much stress, and too little love. Sadly, they are held in universal contempt by the public they are supposed to serve. The public believes bureaucrats are inflexible, stupid, lazy, insensitive and uncaring. Without a doubt, many bureaucrats are all of these things. People often treat bureaucrats as though they expect the worst; bureaucrats frequently respond by giving it to them. Because of the low regard and rough treatment they receive from the public, many bureaucrats suffer from chronically low self-esteem. Bureaucrats are in need of being educated also — careful, subtle, sensitive education. Department heads and agency directors are more like politicians than they are like bureaucrats. Department heads and agency directors are far more interested in keeping politicians happy than the other members of the bureaucracy are. A low-level bureaucrat will religiously follow his book of rules and regulations.
