ABSTRACT

The people care deeply about environmental issues that affect them directly and personally, and they could care less about environmental issues that do not affect them in a direct and personal way. The location of a solid-waste landfill is an extremely important environmental issue to the people — to the people who live around the proposed landfill site. Other people, for the most part, suck the air in and blow the air out without giving much thought to the volume of toxics in the air they are breathing. People are seriously concerned about proper disposal of hazardous wastes if they live near a Superfund site or if they live close to a proposed toxic-waste disposal facility. They worry that their families, their friends, and they will die prematurely from cancer caused by toxic exposures. The people who live away from the real or proposed toxic waste site are mildly concerned at best.
