ABSTRACT

Home water treatment units are purchased for many different reasons. Some consumers may be concerned about chemicals or particulate matters that affect the taste or appearance of their drinking water. Although many home water treatment dealers are legitimate, some are unscrupulous. Some dealers may falsely claim that the drinking water contains harmful levels of chemical contaminants, such as chlorine or lead. Water analyses for health related water problems should be performed by a state approved water testing laboratory. To resolve problems concerning a water treatment unit, the consumer should try settling any dispute with the company that sold the product. If no satisfaction is obtained in this manner, contact the local consumer protection agency or state Attorney General. Although the Federal Trade Commission cannot intervene in individual disputes, it is interested in learning about home water treatment sales practices that are believed to be deceptive.
