ABSTRACT
There is now good evidence that the xylem parenchyma cells actively secrete ions into the extracellular transpiration stream 17 (contrary to the classical Crafts-Broyer18 theory of passive leakage into the xylem). In the radial transport of ions to the xylem, this is the second step which requires active transport across a membrane.
