ABSTRACT

In recent years, the rapid advancement of science and technology has been responsible for the development of industries that employ new manufacturing processes, resulting in the production of a large variety of anthropogenic compounds, many of which are considered hazardous wastes. Among the different hazardous waste management strategies employed, disposal in landfills has been found a technologically feasible and economically viable option. However, hazardous wastes disposal sites have been responsible for leachate generation, leading eventually to contamination of groundwater. In order to avert a gradual deterioration in the quality of aquatic and terrestrial environment, much research has been devoted to the development of efficient and cost-effective technologies for the treatment of leachate wastewaters.
