ABSTRACT

Parasites of the family Notocotylidae Luhe, 1909 belong to several genera, among which are Notocotylus, Catatropis, Quinqueserialis, and Ogmocotyle. Plagiorchiidiasis infection is caused by members of the family Plagiorchiidae Luhe, 1901 and related families such as the Ochetosomatidae Leao, 1944, Telorchiidae Stunkard, 1924, and others. Certain plagiorchid flukes have been recorded from humans. There are other species of plagiorchiids. P. megalorchis Rees, 1952 occurs in the UK and northern Europe and is a parasite of a number of wild birds. Prosthogonimiasis disease is caused by members of the family Prosthogonimidae Nicoll, 1924. They are parasites of birds, rarely in mammals. In poultry, they inhabit the bursa Fabricii, oviduct, and cloaca. Several species belonging to the genus Prosthogonimus Luhe, 1899 are found throughout the world and are known as the "oviduct flukes". They occur mainly in the oviduct of fowl and duck and are very pathogenic to that organ.
