ABSTRACT

Attitude is the effort recognized in people and causes that is translated into a professional and/or personal winning situation. A law enforcement officer can easily “get by” working daily in a capacity of providing only the most routine of services. One young police officer and his equally idealistic partner adopted a motto that precisely summed up their attitude: “We are here to help.” They knew that no one turned to the police unless they were in need of help. That was a positive attitude that brought them many professional rewards such as the number of cases they favorably resolved. Apathy is a negative attitude that knows no age limitations. As apathy takes many forms in letters, it also takes many forms in investigative work: the unwillingness to take an honest gamble, the fear of “rocking the boat,” and the unwillingness to take on the slightest responsibility.
