ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of the summation of a 5-year study in which numerous chemicals and techniques of application were applied. When using emulsions, the following inventory should be made: the location and quantity, growth conditions, width of right of way to be treated in various sections, location of access roads, ditch crossings, fence openings, accessible water for spraying foliage, and crops grown in the section that might limit the method or time of spraying. The ideal situation for the utilities' right-of-ways is a ground coverage of grasses or low-growing shrubs that would not interfere with maintenance. The practice of basal spraying with 2,4,5-T in oil during the winter months has been used for some time. However, this practice has not been adopted in general brush control near power lines. It is a time-consuming method, and often smaller sprouts on lines are missed by this application method.
