ABSTRACT

The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act is the law governing registration of pesticides. It is commonly called Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. The present law was enacted by Congress in 1972 and amended slightly in 1975 and 1978. This is the basic charter for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as for those of us in industry who work to get products registered. Fertilizers, fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides are important reasons for our modern technology in agriculture. Notice of an Rebuttable Presumption Against Reregistration means that EPA believes it has found some evidence of a potential health hazard and is asking producers and users of the product to comment on this evidence and describe counter-balancing economic benefits. The conveners of this conference have long believed that our methods for resolving socioscientific disputes are inadequate and that new methods of dispute resolution must be developed and tested.
