ABSTRACT

This final chapter of the book does more than function as a summary of the book. It nicely connects the various facets of the book, including the emphasis in Chapter 1 on constituting the discussion of African American communication in culturally particular set of norms, beliefs, and worldviews that govern how African Americans relate to the world. The accent on identity from Chapter 2 becomes a common thread throughout the book and helps the reader to grasp the nature of communication competence as well as language and communication styles from Chapter 3. After articulating the functions and politics of communication the book progresses to unravel the nature and types of relationships common with int the African American community in Chapter 4 and how those relationships are protected and shared in digital spaces in Chapter 5. This chapter also does the important work of introducing three theories that can be used to study identity, culture, and communication in general and African American communication in particular.
