ABSTRACT

This introduction sets out the scope and aim of the book which, broadly speaking, is to draw upon evidence that eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, are physical symptoms of the general repression of feminine nature in our culture. The basic premise is established as the author sets out her central aim; to explore Goddess feminism as a platform for healing the breach between women and their bodies. Whilst the development of anorexia is central to this text, the scope of the work is broadened to include dieting behaviours and the deep-seated desire to limit the body’s boundaries. Speculation on the aetiology of anorexia is touched upon and the methodology, routed in feminist liberation theology, body theology and thealogy is established.
