ABSTRACT
The chapter investigates the place of diseases in this pietistic cosmology, uncovering how diseases related to sin and reward, how pious Muslims were to behave and think when sick, how different diseases were perceived differently, and whether seeking cure was seen as impious or improper. Throughout, the chapter looks at how these pietistic writings provided recourses for understanding illness and regulating complaints and care-seeking behavior and modulated the sensoria that conditioned pain and suffering in the Islamicate context.
