ABSTRACT
This chapter reconstructs the historical context of early 20th-century Kerala by exploring the modes of subjectivity and the processes of “othering” in the caste system and in communities. Awareness of the context prepares the reader to recognize the forces that shaped the literary imagination of love and liberation in religious, social, and political terms.
