ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 proposes a digital hermeneutic – not only to elucidate the methodology for this volume, but as a way of thinking about how we encounter religion online. If the Web is a site of discourse, then one must consider the “medium” as well as the “message” and consider its inherent multimodality in that encounter and interpretation. A typology is submitted for this process, using the VHP website as an example. Several Web tools are utilized in this examination: analytics and statistical reporting sites (Similar Web and Alexa), hyperlink mapping (TouchGraph), and webpage archiving (Wayback Machine).
