ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to illustrate how hospices accommodate religion, belief and spirituality by looking at religious material objects in the space of hospice care, as well as how professionals in hospice care use religious jewellery when in practise. Furthermore, this chapter examines this materiality using case studies that provide readers with helpful examples to further their learning and understanding. The chapter also shows how prayer rooms have been transformed, arguing that their purpose is changing and service users may retreat to other places for spiritual comfort. Specifically, this chapter explores how prayer rooms have been used, and who is using them today and why, and where service users have found comfort instead.
