ABSTRACT

The Department of Energy's (DOE) Magellan project was initiated in order to investigate the potential efficacy of cloud computing to address the computing needs of scientists funded by the DOE Office of Science. The goal of the Magellan project was to investigate how the cloud computing business model can be used to serve the needs of DOE Office of Science applications. A key design criteria for the Magellan testbed was flexibility. Magellan was connected to the DOE-SC Advanced Networking Initiative (ANI), an effort to deploy a prototype 100 Gb national network. A diverse set of scientific applications have used the Magellan cloud testbed, resulting in significant scientific discoveries while helping to evaluate the use of cloud computing for science. Magellan at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) was installed in the 25,000 sq ft datacenter in the Theory and Computing Sciences building at Argonne National Laboratory.
