ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the environmental communication of the Finns Party – a rural-populist anti-establishment party turned a radical-right populist anti-immigration party. The chapter describes how the Finns Party have used environmental communication to define who their ‘people’ are, and how they have criticized environmental protection to explicate how the sovereignty of their ‘people’ is being trampled upon. It is also portrayed, how the party’s populist environmental communication shifted from the early 2000s mere defending of the people of the Finnish countryside towards more exclusionary anti-green populism of the 2010s that frames environmentalism and international climate policies as ideologically and economically flawed. The chapter also analyses, how the party utilizes intentionally controversial elements in their environmental communication in performing its populist core message in a hybrid media environment.
