ABSTRACT

Prognoses for climate change are bound to cause changes to the Earth’s hydrological cycle, thus necessarily affecting the landscape on a regional and local level, too. Along with prognoses of increased urbanisation, changing waterscapes, for example increased extreme rain events and droughts, will affect urban landscapes on both a smaller, local scale as well as on an urban and regional scale. Industrialisation was accompanied by increasing urbanisation, followed by a command-and-control paradigm in water management, which involved controlling water in underground pipes and often burying urban rivers and streams. For a while, this was a successful water management based on technical engineering solutions, promoting values related to the health of urban residents and securing prosperity for industry. Climate adaptation in urban landscapes owing to increased precipitation requires transdisciplinary efforts comprising different types of knowledge. Connecting the terms ‘design’ and ‘comment’ reflects the intention of using design products as a medium for interactive comments.
