ABSTRACT

142 The Second Anglo-Boer War (or South African War, 1899–1902) ended with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging. Although they had fought a protracted guerrilla war against the British, the Boer leaders voted 54:6 to surrender their independence. This led to the 1910 creation of the self-governing Union of South Africa which was dominated by Boer leaders, but in 1914, some Boers took advantage of the outbreak of World War I to rebel in a bid to regain republican autonomy.
