ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I will discuss the purposive nature of the conversations that I have with volunteers from the audience attending an event where it has been advertised that I will be doing live demonstrations of therapy. As I discussed in Chapter 1, the event may include me first giving a presentation on a particular psychological topic 1 followed by two demonstrations or it may just be an event where I demonstrate how I work. While there is an expectation that a volunteer will discuss a personal problem that fits the theme of the prior presentation (when one is given), this may not necessarily turn out to be the case. My call for volunteers requests that the person brings a genuine problem that they wish to address effectively. I have put these words in italics to show the purposive nature of the conversation. While I have a purpose in having the conversation (which I will discuss shortly), I am inviting someone who not only has a genuine problem, but also has a purpose in discussing it. As I put it, they want to address the problem more effectively than they are currently doing.
