ABSTRACT

The countries in South Asia possess a glorious history of exhibiting their cultures through various events entrenching tourism prospects. The extant literature largely fails to identify patterns and processes of South Asian traditional tourism events. This chapter summarises event-based tourism literature and focuses on the cultural aspects in general. Principally, this research aims at outlining different traditional tourism events in the South Asian region along the lines of Getz’s (2008) framework for understanding and creating knowledge about event tourism. A desk-based literature approach has been followed for this research with a particular emphasis on online resources analyses. Findings reveal diversified and unique traditional events being held in different nooks and corners of the South Asian region that can be used as tourism foundations. The research underscores a useful approach that needs to be complemented to balance tourism demand and supply equilibrium during both the on-peak and off-peak seasons. The promotion and management of tourism events at national, regional and local levels require collaborative efforts from key stakeholders to attain predefined goals. This piece of work would be helpful for academia as well as tourism practitioners including the policymakers, tour operators, and tourists in this identified region.
