ABSTRACT

Lean systems require constant care and feeding more so than traditional work systems. Accountability systems leverage many of the same tools and techniques, such as visual management, process focus, and problem solving. In David Mann's Shingo Prize-winning book, <italics>Creating a Lean Culture</italics> a primary feature of the daily accountability system is the tiered daily huddle, with corresponding accountability boards for visual management. Leader standard work represents the value-added work that management does on a regular basis those things without which the operations of the organization would suffer. Reflection is necessary to making informed and effective adaptations. Creating the opportunities for frontline associates, managers, and leaders to learn and grow is of paramount importance. This will not happen without intentionally focused effort. Building sustainability into the transformation from the beginning will provide a tremendous advantage during progress.
