ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some reflections on universal basic income in several ways. It revisits and discusses some of the underlying principles and values laid out in the theory chapter, such as inequality, freedom and social justice. The chapter also reflects on several key themes addressed in the textbook, including precariousness and work; poverty and social inequalities; health and wellbeing, and the impact on the environment. It provides a balanced position on basic income, by evaluating the pros and cons of the policy, drawing on arguments from a broad range of perspectives. This includes revisiting against arguments connected to the work of women; the effects on citizenship and migration and debates on alternatives to a basic income, including endowments or annual cash grants. By providing arguments and counter-arguments throughout, the reader can develop an appreciation of the criticisms of the main arguments for a universal basic income.
