ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes violence against women and a possible solution to strengthen security for women by drawing a parallel between Buddhism’s four noble truths and concepts of risk mitigation. It is important to realize there is the crime, there is a cause of crime, there is the cessation of crime and there is a path leading to such cessation. While a number of cases of crime against women are discussed, the infamous Nirbhaya rape case is discussed as a reference point of there being a crime. The cause of crime is a lack of detection, delay in arrest or prosecution, lack of stringent laws against such crime and requirement of social outcry against such acts. Social awareness and responsibility of not victimizing the victim and recognizing the need of action is the path leading to the cessation of such crimes.
