ABSTRACT

This chapter shows comparisons in land ownership in 1873 and 1941 for each of the six geographical counties covered by Land Ownership in the Eastern Counties. The return was compiled on a county basis for England and Wales except London. It included the name of owner, address, acreage and estimated gross rental of estates of one acre and above, together with the county totals. The number of owners and total acreage of all estates below one acre and the amount of common and waste land in each county were also estimated. The information was derived almost entirely from parish rating valuation lists and covers, therefore, all land at that time subject to rates; there are very few exclusions. Statistics of acreage owned by occupiers were collected for many years before the first World War in Agricultural Statistics. After 1927 data on owner-occupation were discontinued in Agricultural Statistics; reliable information on the subject is lacking until 1941.
