ABSTRACT

This chapter presents philosophical background of ethical perspective, which might help to arouse more interest among leaders and future leaders to study ethical reasoning. An agenda for morality in leadership, one that appeals to practitioners, cannot be construed without considering how the view on what a leader is has evolved over time. The ideal Machiavellian leader exercises power in the service of the security, glory and expansion of his reign. Leadership research has focused on leaders' abilities for a long time, trying to demonstrate what causes successful leadership: energy, intelligence, dominance, self-confidence, sociability, openness to experience, task-relevant knowledge and emotional stability, to name the most important. The Caux Round Table is an international network of principled business leaders – leaders who follow moral principles. The Caux Round Table Principles for Business were formally launched in 1994 and presented at the United Nations World Summit on Social Development in 1995.
