ABSTRACT

The presence of pharmaceutical companies in Puerto Rico can be traced as far back as 1947. The spectacular growth of the high-tech manufacturing sector since the mid–1970s has served to provide not only direct income and employment effects but also to feed the growth of an associated information sector. Special locational incentives in the form of negotiable cash grants are available for establishing manufacturing facilities in areas of high unemployment in Puerto Rico. A unique feature of the Fomento effort to promote industrialization has been its involvement in industrial real estate and the management of industrial parks. Helps industries in the selection of machinery and equipment, selection and use of new materials, estimates of production costs, studies on time and motion, site plans, plant layout and inventory control. Assists industrialists with the design and installation of quality control systems. There is also assistance for the financing of equipment and the training of personnel.
