ABSTRACT

The first chapter of this book introduces a theoretical model for analyzing the main objectives of the Russian economic influence in Europe based on three levels of analysis – systemic, at the level of industry, and individual/business. The three levels of analysis try to answer the question: what is the rationale behind Russia’s quest of greater influence in the region? The chapter provides an overview of the existing general conceptualizations of Russian foreign policy in Europe and the more specific research on economic influence through different channels such as energy, trade, and investment. With this in mind, the book goes on to detail how Russia has leveraged its economic presence to cultivate an opaque web of economic and political patronage that the Kremlin has or can use to influence decision-making in critical areas such as energy and foreign policy.
