ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses newly emerging words that come into being as a result of increasing globalisation and the hybridisation of languages and cultures. In particular, we present global words born from Korean and Japanese, or words originating in US/UK English that became popularized in Korea or Japan before becoming global. Although the phenomena discussed here do appear in Chinese, they are much more common in Korean and Japanese, especially in the use of Romanised English. In comparison to Japanese and Korean orthography, which allows for versatile hybridisation with English, the nature of Chinese script also makes it relatively difficult to combine Chinese and English words. Compared to the words discussed in previous chapters (i.e. directly imported English words or locally-made English words), these words have less local implication and more global impact – particularly through international trade and interaction. In this chapter, I aim to focus on the following semantic categories of words:
