ABSTRACT

This chapter examines changes in the principal economic and technological indicators, infrastructural development, distribution and development of technology-embodying inputs in order to identify the principal characteristics in the time path of technological transformation and attempt to identify what were the dynamic or stagnant sectors or elements in the process. Among the principal economic and technological indicators it also examine growth in gross domestic product (GDP) and GDP per capita, changes in the structure of foreign trade, the spatial pattern of development, the development of infrastructure and the distribution of income and assets. The rates of growth of total and per capita GDP were quite high in the 1960s but they decelerated during the 1970s. The continuous decline of the share of agriculture in the GDP is a reflection of stagnation or slow growth of the sector rather than a result of faster growth of the more dynamic sectors.
