ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the political reality is such that, if liberals would support it, reader could enact legal reforms that would spare nearly all children from growing up in the custody of unfit parents or in foster care and from growing up in horrible neighborhoods. As such, the predominant liberal family policy contributes to continued destruction of individual black lives, and to perpetuation of a "black underclass"; sympathy for adult victims of injustice causes liberals to create new victims of that injustice. When a white judge steps down from the bench and hugs a black mother trying mightily to resist the tormenting pulls of addiction, it is a profound gesture. Whatever the precise explanation, the intense sympathy that liberals display for poor black men, when thinking about incarceration in the abstract or about parents losing custody of their children because of child maltreatment charges, entirely evaporates when those same men hit a woman.
