ABSTRACT

Neoliberalism is both an economic doctrine and a cultural ideology. In education, the originally Republican embrace of neoliberal privatization of public schools and the charter school logic of deregulation have been aggressively embraced by many in the Democratic Party. Education in the United States has been radically transformed by both the economic doctrine and ideology of neoliberalism. Since 2010 a number of new for profit educational schemes have been launched to allow investors to profit from public education. In addition to the profit motive driving the neoliberal privatization of education, there is a strong ideological component. Public school reform ought to aim to dismantle racial, ethnic, and linguistic segregation as well as class segregation as part of a broader commitment to inclusive and equal democracy. As neoliberal privatization and corporate models of restructuring expand, they create a new two-tiered educational system.
