ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the termination stage, including a general description of termination characteristics, goals, and benefits and challenges. It reviews group work techniques include rounds, dyads, sentence completion, scaling, values contract, summarization, journaling, reunions, scrapbooks, comfort zone, and personal growth charts. Termination may indicate the end of a relationship in its current capacity, the unexpected departure of a group member, the close of a specific group session, or the conclusion of a particular group experience even though the relationship between an individual member and leader may continue in different capacities. Self-awareness in the termination process refers to recognizing personal attributes and behaviors that facilitate skill development and healthy relationships. Developing self-awareness allows members to improve their decision-making ability as well as their interpersonal relationships inside and outside the group. Leaders prepare members for termination by providing logistical and therapeutic structure. With respect to logistical structure, leaders should know when to introduce termination.
