ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the forming and orienting stage of group work. The forming and orienting stage of a group can be defined as a time of orientation and exploration. Group members attempt to figure out their place in the group, get acquainted with fellow group members, and explore members' expectations. During the planning phase and pre-group interviews, group goals are formulated. Goals are outcomes desired by either individual members or by the entire group. Important aspect of helping members develop individual goals is bringing into the open any hidden agendas that members might have. For instance, members might have goals that run contrary to the purpose of the group. Confidentiality should have been explained beforehand, during the screening process. Confidentiality is the agreement among all members and leaders that what is said in the group stays in the group.
