ABSTRACT

Adlerian, Gestalt, and psychodrama principles have been applied in various group counseling formats; they emphasize personal responsibility, insight, communication, and social relationships. This chapter describes applications of these approaches to group practice, including specific techniques and procedures. Gestalt and psychodrama groups are used widely across various settings and with a variety of individuals, which is illustrated through the use of case studies and experiential exercises. The Adlerian counselor is free to express his or her opinion to the client if it is beneficial for the client's healing process. Adlerian group leaders must be collaborative and open about sharing their feelings and opinions. The leader of psychodrama groups plays the role of producer, facilitator, observer, analyzer, and director. Leaders plan the session, create a therapeutic environment, provide encouragement and guidance for the protagonist, and lead the sharing and discussion after the scene has been acted out.
