ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 emphasizes the need for an overall conspectus of an inquiry project prior to taking the first step. Researchers are encouraged to determine whether the phenomenon can be empirically studied. Applied research is contrasted to fundamental or “pure” research. The foundation of qualitative versus qualitative research is stressed, and the value of a mixed-methods approach is emphasized. Techniques for searching the web for specific research sources are outlined to support the review of completed studies that give organization to a new project. The importance of reading the Abstracts of published papers is covered as well.
