ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a template for creating a research report. Using the National Research Council of the National Academies standards for quality research, key components included in research reports, including dissertations, are discussed. The standards guide researchers to pose significant questions that may be investigated empirically, link research to relevant theory, use methods that permit direct investigation of the question, provide a coherent and explicit chain of reasoning, replicate and generalize across studies, and disclose research to encourage professional scrutiny and critique. This chapter is useful for researchers and dissertators, as descriptions of the abstract, introduction, problem statement, review of the literature, research method, reporting findings, and emphasizing research significance are presented. Common ways of reporting quantitative and qualitative data are also presented. Finally, validity and reliability are discussed in the context of writing a credible quantitative or qualitative research report.
