ABSTRACT

Chapter 17 summarizes the ten steps in the research process, and is especially useful for researchers who are planning a research study. At the beginning of the chapter the authors discuss the connection between inquisitiveness, empiricism, and observation, and how these human curiosities align with the research process. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research paradigms are revisited in this chapter. Finally, critical components involved in each step of the research process introduced in the second part of this text are underscored, and examples of how to display data are shared. The chapter concludes with a short discussion about the many uses of research, suggesting that research can be exploratory, descriptive, experimental, or causal-comparative, and the authors note that the steps outlined in this book are guidelines for engaging in a traditional research project; most research can be carried out and be valid for consumers of research without navigating all of the steps.
