ABSTRACT

This chapter presents reactions to return-to-duty case of Kyra Johnson, an Army first lieutenant. The chapter outlines her case as well as details of her bone stress injury. The chapter also discusses issues pertaining to a lack of confidence in return-to-duty capabilities, her external locus of control, and feelings of isolation and loss of identity. These factors are further explained through the Basic Psychological Needs Theory, a sub-theory of the larger Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Based on the specifics of Kyra’s case, an interprofessional care plan is developed, and the case is evaluated from the perspective of three healthcare professionals: a sport psychology consultant, a physical therapist, and a nurse practitioner. The chapter also highlights ethical considerations and needs for referral, and provides an update of Kyra’s progress six months later.
