ABSTRACT

The way a school presents itself carries messages on the general school ethos, as well as communicating aspects of learning and the process of art-making. Standards of cleanliness and neatness in display reflect the kind of expectations the school has of its pupils and staff. Thoughtful display promotes an awareness of quality of work, with respect for pupils' achievements. Display may be used to promote pupils' awareness of their surroundings, and to develop their aesthetic sensitivity, as well as a sense of awe and wonder'. Display may be used also to reinforce themes, topics and projects. Display is concerned with process: both the finished product of an activity and reflecting the stages within that activity — work in progress. Teachers need to be aware of the way they are displaying pupils work, and how and to what effect they are contributing to, or affecting a display.
